From Helmsley Market Square we enter Duncombe Park close to the River Rye which we follow south west passing the Weir on our way. Our route then continues north west to Griff Lodge, close to the Cleveland Way, and then north passing Griff Farm and the site of the medieval village of Griff before reaching Rievaulx Terrace where we will take lunch. After lunch we take a permissive path into Rievaulx village and follow the road past the magnificent Cistercian Abbey, founded in 1132, and along to Rievaulx Bridge. Another short walk along the road takes us to the Cleveland Way and back to Griff Lodge where we retrace our footsteps for a short while before passing in front of Duncombe Park House and back to Helmsley via the Walled Garden.
